#Goosberries

Rating: 6/10 Selfish VS Altruistic This short story talks about altruism (Ivan) VS selfishness (Ivan's brother Nikolai). I felt that the author placed the altruistic character in the story to contrast and strongly criticize Nikolai. But, was Nikolai selfish from the start? At the first time, Nikolai had one great goal, being a landowner and growing gooseberries. Since he only focused on achieving his goal, he became selfish. This story tells that being blind with a strong desire is dangerous. I liked the message of the story (more than the lady with a dog). But the story is still vague and hard to understand clearly. Especially why author put a description that Aliokhin hadn’t take a shower for a long time that the water turned brown? Therefore, I rated 6.5 out of 10. (If teacher sees this blog, please make a comment why about my question toward Aliokhin)

#3 The lady with the Dog

Rating: 6/10 Since this story talks about cheating on someone, which is morally wrong, I thought that this story would end with two main characters losing everything and getting only love. Unfortunately, the story is open-ended. If I had a chance to change the story, I would end this story by making Gurov and Anna escape from their own family but soon regrets and break up. Not only the ending, but I also didn’t satisfy with the main characters. Anna Sergeyevna, who looks naive, is not kind and innocent. Even though she felt guilty about her husband, she doesn’t stop the relationship with Gurov. Gurov, a playboy, had cheated on others a lot, which is wrong.  The short story was interesting that I was able to get into it, (I almost give it 10/10) however I didn’t like the ending and  rated 6/10.

#2 The Student

After 1st reading)  Rating: 5 /10  <The Student> written by Checkov has a vivid description that expresses the atmosphere of cold deep winter. However, I couldn’t get the author’s message at all. It was hard to understand the message, especially Ivan's enlightenment after he talks the story to the window and her daughter. Even though this very short story has a sharp depiction, getting into the story and understand the author’s message was hard.  After 2nd reading) Rating: 8.5/10 In the first reading, matching this short story with a hero's journey was tough. After having discussion time in the class, I could understand the hidden message. The story seems blurred when I didn't catch the hidden meaning, but after reading it twice, the story was interesting. Especially the scene of Vasilisa's tear made me imagine the unknown story of the daughter and mom. To compare this story with hero journey stage 6, which is a step of enemy and testes, Ivan testes Vasilisa and h...

#1 A Sound of Thunder

Rating: 8/10 I've read Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and liked the author's imagination and the way how he describes the scene. Therefore I anticipated the short story 'A Sound of Thunder' before I read it. The story didn't disappoint me, but there was a thing to improve. The story talked about the “butterfly effect” with the concept of time travel, since this story came out before the butterfly effect is introduced to the world, I was surprised at the author’s imagination. One thing to improve is that this story is short. The concept of the butterfly effect showing the responsibility of our actions and time travel is so creative that the author could write a longer story. It would be more interesting if this story was long. This is the reason why I gave score of 8 out of 10.
